For Windows

The free PDF editor for Windows.

A desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 that edits, signs, converts and organizes PDFs on your own PC. No subscription, no account and no uploads.

Built for the way Windows works

  • Your default PDF app. The installer offers Paperwing for opening PDFs. Set it in Settings, Apps, Default apps.
  • PDF thumbnails in File Explorer while Paperwing is your PDF app, so you can see what’s in a file before you open it.
  • Installer or portable. Install it with Start-menu and desktop shortcuts, or run the portable version from any folder or USB stick.
  • Updates you control. The installer version tells you when there’s a new release and installs it only when you choose Update.
  • Native file dialogs and a real Save that writes back to the original file.
  • Ctrl shortcuts you already know, including Acrobat’s single-key tools.

Everything you need from a PDF editor

Paperwing has more than 100 tools, all free: edit text and images, sign, fill forms, merge, split, compress, convert to Word and from Word, OCR, redact and password protect. See all the tools.

Private by default

Every tool runs on your PC. Paperwing has no account, no analytics and no telemetry, and your documents are never uploaded. The only times it goes online are to check for updates (which you can turn off) and for a few one-time engine downloads, such as the Office converter.

Install in a minute

  1. Download the installer above (about 190 MB), or the portable zip from the download page.
  2. Run it. If Windows protected your PC appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Open a PDF, or drag one onto the window.

Questions

Is Paperwing really free on Windows?

Yes. Every tool is free, with no trial, no watermark and no account. It’s open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence.

Does it work on Windows 10?

Yes. Paperwing runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Can I use it without installing anything?

Yes. Download the portable zip, unzip it anywhere (even a USB stick) and run Paperwing.exe. Settings stay in a Paperwing Data folder beside it.

Why does Windows say it protected my PC?

Paperwing isn’t code-signed yet, and SmartScreen warns about any unsigned app. Click More info, then Run anyway. You only do this once.
