Changelog
What’s new in Paperwing.
Every release, newest first. Paperwing tells you when an update is out and installs it only when you choose.
Paperwing 1.2.3
Paperwing 1.2.3
Updates are noticed sooner, a touchscreen fix, and fixes from BentoPDF.
Better
- Updates found on every launch. Paperwing now checks each time it starts, and every two hours while it's open, so a new version shows up right away. Later holds the notice back for a day.
- Taskbar Recent list keeps every file. On Windows, files with the same name used to replace each other in the taskbar's Recent list. Paperwing now keeps its own list of your last 10 files, showing the folder when names match.
- Built on Electron 45.
Fixed
- Select works on touchscreens. On touchscreen Windows computers, Select could leave the viewer in Hand mode, so text couldn't be selected or copied. Thanks to @Lehnemann for reporting it and @austinwilkerson for the fix.
- Long paths in tooltips wrap and stay inside the window.
- From BentoPDF: Validate Signature detects more signatures, XPS to PDF converts XPS files from scanners, and Merge PDF and Markdown to PDF are fixed.
Everything new in 1.2 (Acrobat-style toolbar menus, page actions on thumbnails, recovery of unsaved edits, offline engines and OCR) is in the 1.2.0 release.
On Windows, Paperwing 1.1 and later update themselves: open Paperwing and choose Help ▸ Check for updates if it hasn't offered 1.2.3 yet. On macOS and the portable build, download it below and install it over the old version. Full list of changes: CHANGELOG.md.

Paperwing 1.2.2
Paperwing 1.2.2
A fix for opening files that changed, and smoother work with many PDFs open at once.
Fixed
- Opening a file shows its latest version. If a PDF was already open in a tab and another app saved a new version of it (a resume regenerated under the same name, say), opening it again showed the old version until Paperwing was restarted. Paperwing now loads the new version in place, keeping your page and zoom, and asks first if the tab has unsaved changes.
Better
- Same-named files told apart. Tabs and Home's Recent list show which folder each file is in when two have the same name, and hovering a tab shows its full path.
- Know when a file changes. When another app saves a PDF you have open, Paperwing says so, with Reload to show the new version or Dismiss to keep working on yours.
- No accidental overwrites. Saving asks first if another app saved a newer version since you opened it: replace it, save yours as a copy, or cancel.
- Tab menu. Right-click a tab to close it, close the others or those to its right, show the file in File Explorer or Finder, copy its path, or reopen a document you closed.
- The window remembers its place. Paperwing opens at the size and position you left it, maximized if it was.

Paperwing 1.2.1
Paperwing 1.2.1
Fixes for 1.2, and the latest BentoPDF (2.8.10) with its security hardening.
Safer
- Built on BentoPDF 2.8.10. Sanitize, Flatten and Redact remove hidden content more thoroughly, signature validation is stricter, and the PDF engine and viewer are newer.
- Signature checks you can trust. Validate Signatures no longer reports a valid signature as unverified when the signer's certificate isn't the first one in it.
Better
- Updates show up sooner, and wait for you. Paperwing now checks each time it starts and every few hours while it's open, instead of once a day. On Windows it tells you a new version is available and downloads it only when you choose Update, with its progress shown.
Fixed
- Readable shortcuts in tooltips. The keyboard shortcut next to each tooltip's label was grey on grey in both light and dark themes. It's now an outlined key with clear, high-contrast text.
- Full-size taskbar icon. On Windows, Paperwing's icon is now the same size as other apps' (it was a few pixels smaller at common display scaling). If the taskbar still shows the old one after updating, unpin Paperwing and pin it again; Windows caches icons.
Everything new in 1.2 (Acrobat-style toolbar menus, page actions on thumbnails, recovery of unsaved edits, offline engines and OCR) is in the 1.2.0 release.

Paperwing 1.2.0
Paperwing 1.2.0
Works like you'd expect, everywhere: smarter toolbars, page actions on thumbnails, and every tool offline.
New
- Toolbar buttons that remember. Click the small arrow on Highlight, Draw, Comment, Text or Select (or right-click it) to pick a related tool: Underline, Rectangle, Arrow, Callout, Hand and more. The tool you pick stays on the button.
- Tooltips on every button, with its keyboard shortcut.
- Page actions in the thumbnails. Right-click a page to rotate, insert, extract, move or delete it, or drag it to a new place. Ctrl+click or Shift+click to work on several pages at once, and drop a PDF onto the thumbnails to insert its pages there. Ctrl+Z undoes it.
- Your edits survive a crash. Unsaved changes are kept safe every few seconds and come back when Paperwing reopens.
- No more lost work in tools. Closing Edit a PDF, Prepare a form or Organize pages with unsaved changes asks first.
- Recent files in the taskbar and Dock. Right-click Paperwing's icon to reopen them.
- Updates you won't miss (macOS and portable). The notice stays until you act on it, Help shows a dot until you've updated, and Download fetches the right file for your Mac or PC.
- Truer fonts. PDFs that rely on standard fonts they don't include (Times, Arial, Courier, Calibri, Cambria…) now keep their look and spacing.
Better
- Advanced tools work offline. The engines for PDF to Word, PDF/A, Font to Outline, OCR (in English) and the other advanced tools now come with the app instead of downloading on first use.
- Cleaner tools. No more duplicate Download buttons, second upload boxes or leftover website text: each tool shows just what it needs.
- Crisper icon in the Windows taskbar, the same size as other apps'.
Fixed
- Tools no longer flash their upload screen before your document appears.
- Copying text from some PDFs gave tabs instead of spaces, and search missed phrases in them.
- The side rail and tool list didn't respond while a full-page tool was open.
- Edit a PDF: changing a font now works, System fonts no longer shows an error, and exported text keeps its lines.
- Fill & Sign, Fill a form and Timestamp work again.
Paperwing will tell you about this update (it checks once a day). Download it below and install it over the old version; if you have 1.1 on Windows, it updates itself. Full list of changes: CHANGELOG.md.

Paperwing 1.1.0
Paperwing 1.1.0
Faster, smoother and a little more polished, everywhere.
Faster
- Opens in about a second. The launch screen is gone: the window appears as soon as it's ready, less than half the time it took before.
- Smooth scrolling, even through long and scanned documents: a steady 60 fps using a quarter of the CPU it used to.
- Quicker restores. Your last session's tabs come back instantly; each document loads when you open its tab.
New
- Previews on Home. Recent files show their first page, in the list and the grid.
- PDF thumbnails in File Explorer (Windows) while Paperwing is your default PDF app.
- Any zoom level. Click the zoom percentage on the right rail (or press Ctrl+Y) to pick a preset or type your own.
- Collapsible side panel. The open panel's button is highlighted; click it again, or Hide panel, to close it.
- Clear recent on Home. Starred files stay.
- Pick up where you left off. Documents reopen at the page and zoom you left them at.
- Right-click a recent file to show it in File Explorer or Finder, copy its path, compress it, or combine it with other files.
- Batch tools. Start Compress, Flatten, PDF to Word and many more from Home, pick several PDFs, and they're all done in one go.
- Automatic updates (Windows installer, from this version on). New versions download in the background; restart when you're ready.
- Nothing a tool makes gets lost. Compressed, merged and converted documents open as unsaved: Paperwing asks before closing them and brings them back if it closes unexpectedly.
Fixed
- Ctrl+scroll zoom jumped to the smallest size on the first notch out. It now zooms in even, smooth steps both ways.
- The Automatic zoom preference is applied reliably again.

Paperwing 1.0.1
Paperwing 1.0.1
A small update to the free, open-source alternative to Adobe Acrobat.
What's changed
- Annotation styles open on the right. Colour, opacity, stroke width and the other style options now slide out beside the navigation rail, like comments and thumbnails, instead of covering the floating annotation toolbar on the left.
- New Annotation style button on the right rail, to open and close the styles at any time.
If you have 1.0.0, Paperwing will let you know this version is available (it checks once a day): download it below and install it over the old one. New to Paperwing? See the 1.0 release notes and the full changelog.
