For macOS

The free PDF editor for Mac.

Everything Preview doesn’t do, in a free desktop app for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Edit, sign, convert and organize PDFs offline, with no account.

More than Preview, without the subscription

Preview is fine for reading and quick markup. When you need to change the words in a PDF, make a scan searchable, remove information properly or turn a document into Word, Paperwing does it, for free.

A real Mac app

  • Native builds for Apple Silicon and Intel.
  • ⌘ shortcuts that mirror Acrobat’s, including single-key tools like H, V and U.
  • Light and dark themes that follow your Mac’s appearance.
  • Open PDFs with Paperwing by default: select a PDF in Finder, File, Get Info, Open with: Paperwing, Change All.

Private by default

Every tool runs on your Mac. There’s no account, no analytics and no telemetry, and your documents are never uploaded.

Install it

  1. Download the DMG for your Mac above, or from the download page.
  2. Open it and drag Paperwing into Applications.
  3. The first time, right-click Paperwing in Applications and choose Open.

Questions

Does Paperwing run on Apple Silicon?

Yes. There are separate builds for Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 and later) and Intel Macs, and the download button picks the right one for you.

Which macOS versions are supported?

macOS 12 Monterey or later.

How is it different from Preview?

Preview is good for reading, simple markup and signing. Paperwing adds editing the text and images in a PDF, OCR, real redaction, conversion to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, compression, forms, digital signatures and more than 100 other tools.

Why does macOS warn me the first time?

Paperwing isn’t notarized by Apple yet. Right-click it in Applications and choose Open once. If macOS says it’s damaged, run xattr -cr /Applications/Paperwing.app in Terminal.
