# Fill in a PDF form and keep it private.

## How to fill out PDF forms with Paperwing

1. Open Paperwing and drop your PDF on the window, or press Ctrl+O (⌘O on a Mac).
2. Open **All tools** and choose **Fill a form** (under E-Sign), or search for “form”.
3. Click each field and type your answers.
4. Tick boxes, choose options and add your signature with **Fill & Sign** if the form asks for one.
5. To stop the answers being changed later, run **Flatten PDF** .
6. The result opens in a new tab and your original stays untouched. Press Ctrl+S to save it, or Shift+Ctrl+S to save a copy.

## Questions

### The PDF has no fields. Can I still fill it in?

Yes. Use **Fill & Sign** or a text box from the toolbar to type anywhere on the page, or build real fields with **Create PDF Form** .

### What is an XFA form?

An older type of interactive form, common in government and tax documents, that many PDF apps can’t open. Paperwing’s form filler supports it.
